Find Your Style

Finding your style is a journey that will help you grow and develop as a person. Your style is an outward expression of your inner self. It takes time to develop and understand your style.

Start by examining what you wear now; the fits, the colors, the patterns, and the types of items. Create a physical or mental log of these items as your base. After you finish inventorying, you can sell or donate items that you no longer want, need, or fit. It is important to get rid of these items to create space in your closet and your head. You can now start to build your own unique style.

Below are steps you can take

Find your future style-

If you don’t like your clothes, then you will never want to wear them. Look for the clothes you want to wear and that you feel comfortable in.

Find your fit-

Get measured and look up what sizes fit your body best. Then try on different pieces of clothing from different manufacturers. Often, the same size and fit will vary. Find a brand or brands that you like and fits your body best.

Start slow and be patient-

You’ve found your style, you have the brand, size and fit. Go slow, find several key pieces that will be the foundation of your wardrobe.

Build with the basics-

After you’ve found your foundational piece or pieces, get back to basics. Items such as a navy or charcoal suit, a well fitting dress shirt, a comfortable sportshirt, a sport coat, dark rinse denim, and khaki chinos.

Refine-

No matter how complete you think your wardrobe is, it is always best to reexamine what you have. Think about items that you haven’t worn recently. If you can’t picture yourself wearing these items, it might be time to sell or donate them. I do this every six to twelve months.

These steps will help you find your style, allow you to build it, and finally refine it.

Building your style is not easy and it will take time. Be patient and find the brands that suit you best. Find and follow those who inspire you. There are countless Instagram and Facebook pages devoted to style. Personally, my favorite way to find new style inspiration is in books.
